In a major push to empower young entrepreneurs, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the shortlisting of 65 student innovators for the final stage of the highly competitive Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG), following an overwhelming 30,639 applications nationwide.

The Federal Government confirmed that the finalists were selected from 404 tertiary institutions across Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in one of the country’s most ambitious youth-focused innovation programmes.

The initiative, which offers equity-free funding of up to ₦50 million per beneficiary, is designed to transform promising student-led ideas into scalable, real-world businesses capable of driving economic growth and job creation.

According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the 65 finalists will now proceed to a final decision phase — a four-day intensive venture development bootcamp scheduled to run from March 26 to 29, 2026. The programme will feature expert mentorship, business model refinement, pitch training, and rigorous investor-style evaluations.

Winners of the grants are expected to be unveiled at a high-profile awards ceremony on March 29.

Officials revealed that the shortlisted innovations span critical sectors including AgriTech, health-tech, renewable energy, fintech, edtech, climate solutions, and medical innovation — areas seen as key to Nigeria’s long-term economic transformation.

The Student Venture Capital Grant forms a central pillar of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at shifting Nigeria’s economy from dependence on traditional employment to a more innovation-driven, entrepreneurship-led model.

The programme is unfolding against the backdrop of Nigeria’s ongoing youth employment challenge. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics indicates that youth unemployment (ages 15–34) stood at 6.5% as of Q2 2024, affecting an estimated 4.18 million young Nigerians.

However, analysts warn that the headline figure masks deeper structural issues, with a vast majority of employed youths engaged in the informal sector, often in low-paying and unstable jobs. With over 60% of Nigeria’s population under the age of 30 and approximately 1.7 million graduates entering the labour market annually, pressure continues to mount on the government to create sustainable opportunities.

The S-VCG is part of a broader ecosystem of youth empowerment initiatives introduced by the Tinubu administration. These include the Nigerian Youth Academy (NiYA), the 3 million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme focused on digital skills, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), and other interventions targeting entrepreneurship, technical training, and grassroots economic development.

Government officials say the overarching goal is to transition young Nigerians from job seekers into job creators, thereby reducing poverty and strengthening the country’s economic resilience.

As anticipation builds ahead of the final selection, stakeholders across the country are closely watching to see whether the programme will deliver tangible impact and produce the next generation of successful Nigerian startups.

Details of the shortlisted candidates and their projects are expected to be released in the coming days as the bootcamp begins.

This is a developing story. Further updates will follow.
