Women Advocates Seek Media Coverage for Female Rights

In a bid to ensure increased and improved media reportage of girls and women rights in Nigeria, gender advocates from civil society organisations have called for a wider media coverage and prompt reportage of female rights.

They made the call on August 7 at a round table discussion in Lagos organised to appraise the viewpoint of civil society and media practitioners on the status of media coverage of girls and women.

Taco Westerhuis, Senior Economic Officer at the Netherlands Embassy in Nigeria, reiterated the embassy’s commitment to the female gender, adding that civil societies play key roles in the crusade for women and girls rights protection.

Dupe Olaoye-Osinkolu, who represented Ifeyinwa Omowole, President of the National Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, at the event highlighted the importance of increasing reportage of girls and women in the Nigerian media.

Motunrayo Alaka,Coordinator, Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, WSCIJ, said the centre’s decision to partner with non- governmental and media organizations was in recognition of their contributions to the promotion of girls and women’s issues in the country.

The event was organized by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism in conjunction with the Royal Netherlands Embassy.
