The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has said that it gets higher cases of abuse of women and children in Nigeria.
Chidi Odinkalu, chairman of the governing council of the NHRC, disclosed this today at a one-day conference on reporting of women issues in Abuja.
Stating cases of serious abuse of women and children, Odinkalu said the media and the Commission have not done enough to check the abuse of this vulnerable group of people. He expressed concern that the relevant institutions have not allowed the crisis in the Nigerian society to inspire the reporting and curbing of these abuse.
Odinkalu spoke at a round table discussion jointly organized by the Commission and the Wole Soyinka Center for Investigative Journalism, WSCIJ. It held at the office of the Commission in Abuja.
Odinkalu, who said the Commission, has performed five percent of its capacity, stressed the need to be honest about the issues of abuses. He said policy makers and other stakeholders are guilty of encouraging the abuses. “ If I have my way, I will abolish the ministry of women affairs,” he said.
His reason is that the creation of that ministry gives the impression that the other ministries have no business with women affairs
