Al-Shabab, a Somali based terrorist organisation has named Ahmed Umar as its new leader.
Appointment of the new leader also known as Abu Ubaidah, was disclosed in an online statement issued by the group with a promise to launch a reprisal attack against the killing of their previous leader, Abdi Godane who was killed alongside two other members of the group by a United States, US, airstrike last week Monday.
“Avenging the death of our scholars and leader is a binding obligation on our shoulders that we will never relinquish nor forget no matter how long it takes,” al-Shabab was quoted as saying in the online.
Al-Shabab has been responsible for the deaths of Somalis and foreigners alike since it started its onslaught on government agencies and recently reaffirmed its alliance with al-Qaida, a global terrorist group.
The Somalian government had placed the country on red alert of possible reprisal attack by the Islamic group, after the US confirmed the killing of Godane, last Friday.
