Johnson Olawumi, Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has explained that the benefits coming with the full computerisation of corps members’ mobilisation is worth more than the N4,000 fee levied on prospective corps members for the processing.

Briefing the directorate staff on the sensitization of prospective corps members on the full computerisation of the mobilisation process in Abuja, the DG said the fee is reasonable especially when lives of prospective corps members that would be saved from road accidents are considered.

“It is noteworthy that while many people have lauded the project, a few others have raised observation on the payment of N4, 000 by prospective corps members who are to use the ICT platform to register,” Olawumi said adding that the fee was for services and infrastructure to be deployed by the collaborating firm, and not for the scheme or the corps producing institutions, as alleged by some sources.

Olawumi identified some unwarranted practices in the scheme, which include mobilisation of unqualified persons into national service, lack of proper record of mobilised persons, wrong practices in the mobilisation process by students and their institutions, tiring registration process in camps amongst others, saying these will be curbed with the full computerisation process.

He urged Nigerians and staff of the scheme to accept the newly introduced policy, as it would help rein in irregularities in the scheme.

However, the NYSC DG noted that the policy was optional for the 2014/2015 Batch C corps members but would be made mandatory from next year with the Batch A set.
