The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to popular social media activist Justice Chidiebere, widely known online as “Justice Crack,” under strict conditions following weeks of detention over controversial videos criticizing alleged welfare conditions within the Nigerian military.
The court approved bail in the sum of ₦5 million and ordered that the activist provide one surety who must also enter a bond of ₦5 million.
In addition to the financial conditions, the court directed Justice Crack to surrender his international passport and comply with regular reporting requirements to authorities pending the hearing and determination of the case.
Justice Chidiebere has remained in detention since late April following his arrest by the Nigerian Army over viral social media videos in which he allegedly exposed poor feeding and welfare conditions affecting soldiers.
Authorities subsequently filed charges reportedly bordering on cybercrime and actions considered capable of causing a breach of public peace.
The latest ruling follows multiple adjournments and delays surrounding earlier bail applications filed by the activist’s legal team.
Although supporters welcomed the court’s decision to grant bail, many expressed concern over what they described as the severity of the attached conditions, particularly the ₦5 million bond and requirement for a credible surety willing to undertake the financial responsibility.
The case has attracted significant public attention online, with supporters of Justice Crack mobilizing fundraising efforts and public campaigns aimed at helping him meet the bail requirements and regain his freedom.
The activist commands a large following on social media, where his outspoken commentary on governance, security, and social issues has made him a controversial but influential figure among young Nigerians.
Human rights advocates and civil society groups have also continued to debate the broader implications of the case, especially concerning freedom of expression, government tolerance of criticism, and the treatment of online activists in Nigeria.
Legal analysts say the case could become a major test of the balance between national security concerns and constitutional rights to free speech in the digital age.
Despite securing bail, Justice Crack will remain in custody until all conditions imposed by the court are fully perfected.
Further updates are expected as efforts continue to secure his release and prepare for the next stage of the legal proceedings.
