The Federal Government on Tuesday, said admissions into tertiary institutions conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board may need to be reviewed, in order to adequately cater for colleges of education and other tertiary institutions.
Ibrahim Shekarau, minister of Education, made this known in Katsina State.
He said the process of admission into tertiary institutions need to be re-examined retrospectively in order to correct possible errors.
Shekarau was responding to an earlier remark that there had been a decline in population of students at the colleges, owing to the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, conducted by JAMB.
It is argued that only candidates who fail to gain admission into universities at the UTME were left for the colleges of education.
Shekarau however, said a national summit on education would soon be convened to deliberate on issues affecting the education sector, in order to come up with a realistic roadmap to move the sector forward.
The Minister who was on an impact assessment tour of federal tertiary institutions in Katsina State, commissioned some completed Tertiary Education Trust, TETfund, projects in the state college of education, including 150-capacity lecture hall, School of Secondary Education Sciences and School of Primary Education and Early Childhood Care Education, among others.
He said the commissioning of the projects was in line with the determination of the Federal Government to increase access to tertiary education, while at the same time improving on the quality of education.
Shekarau urged teachers in the country to see their assignment as critical to national development, saying education remains the only vehicle through which any nation could be developed.
He also said the Federal Government would do all it could to attract more young Nigerians into the teaching profession.
