Following the triumph of the Nigerian Under-20 side in Senegal, the coach of the side, Manu Garba has described his team as the future of Nigerian football.

Garba said most of the players were drawn from football academies within the country, except for two, who play in the Nigerian premier league. He said he was therefore impressed that the team was able to win the competition regardless.

In his post match conference after the final, Garba could not hide his delight. “I feel elated and great. I was part of the team that won the same competition in 1983 as a player and I’m happy to win it as a coach,” he said.

“This team is the future of Nigerian football. We have only two players from the Nigeria Premier League with the rest from academies, which is a good sign for the development of Nigerian football,” he emphasized.

Nigeria will now proceed to New Zealand for the World Youth Championship to face Brazil, hungary and Korea DPR in the group phase of the competition taking off in May, 2015.
