The Lagos State sector command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has urged motorist to fast track the process of their new number plate and drivers license before August 1, 2014 or risk arrest and prosecution.
Chidi Nkwonta, Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC stated this at a news conference on Monday.
Nkwonta said that the command would swing into action as soon as the deadline elapses.
Although a Federal High Court had earlier ruled that the FRSC couldn’t compel people to get a new license plate, Nkwonta said Peter Umeadi, chief judge in the high court of Anambra State, had ruled recently that the directive issued by the FRSC was legal, valid, subsisting and in conformity with the FRSC Act of 2007, regulations of 2012 and the 1999 constitution of Nigeria.
“The 2007 Act and the constitution empower us to produce vehicle number plates and drivers license and distribute to the 36 states of the country. Anyone that fails to obtain these documents by August 1, 2014 would be arrested and prosecuted according to the law,” Nkwonta said.
