Starting Sunday, June 8, 2025, Nigerians will face increased costs for obtaining or renewing vehicle and driver’s licenses, following an official approval by the Joint Tax Board (JTB).
The JTB, which coordinates tax administration across the country, has sanctioned a nationwide upward review in the pricing structure for both new applications and renewals. This means that motorists will now have to pay more for essential licensing services across all states.
Though the exact figures have not been publicly released by all states, multiple reports indicate significant percentage increases, especially in metropolitan areas where demand is high. The new pricing is expected to reflect the rising operational costs and infrastructure upgrades associated with license issuance.
The announcement has already stirred public concern, with many Nigerians expressing frustration on social media over the timing and economic impact of the decision. “Everything is going up — food, fuel, and now this. It’s getting harder to survive,” one Lagos resident said.
Authorities have defended the hike, citing the need to modernize service delivery, enhance road safety systems, and align fees with current economic realities. According to officials, the updated pricing model will also support digitalization efforts and reduce delays in the issuance process.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and State Licensing Offices have been directed to begin full implementation by the effective date.
Motorists are advised to check with their local licensing authorities for detailed fee schedules and prepare ahead of the new pricing regime to avoid potential penalties or delays.
This development marks a significant change for millions of road users nationwide, and industry watchers say it could have ripple effects on transportation costs and the informal vehicle market.
