Miracle Escape in Lagos as Four-Storey School Building Collapses in Ogba Seconds After Students and Teachers Evacuate
Hundreds of pupils narrowly avoid tragedy after quick-thinking teachers evacuate Yemco school building moments before it crumbles into rubble in Aguda, Ogba, sparking fresh concerns over building safety in Lagos.
What could have become one of the deadliest school disasters in Lagos turned into a miraculous escape after hundreds of students and teachers fled a four-storey school building just seconds before it collapsed in the Aguda area of Ogba.
The building, located at 11 Adudatu Street behind County Hospital, housed Yemco Nursery and Primary School and Yemco Comprehensive College, where nursery, primary, and secondary school pupils were in class when the terrifying incident occurred on Monday around midday.
Eyewitnesses said the frightening warning signs appeared suddenly when stones and debris began falling from the roof. Within moments, large cracks started spreading across interior walls, triggering panic among students and staff.
“Stones started falling and cracks appeared everywhere—we screamed and ran out,” a resident in the neighborhood recalled.
Realizing the imminent danger, teachers and school authorities immediately ordered an emergency evacuation, directing pupils to exit the building as quickly as possible. Witnesses say the last person left the structure just minutes—some accounts say about three minutes—before the entire building collapsed.
Moments later, the structure came crashing down with a thunderous roar, folding inward as concrete slabs and metal beams gave way. Thick clouds of dust filled the air as the building was reduced to a massive pile of rubble.
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, quickly arrived at the scene to cordon off the area and begin safety assessments of the debris.
Authorities confirmed that no lives were lost, and there were no serious injuries directly caused by the collapse. However, a few individuals reportedly sustained minor bruises and scrapes during the hurried evacuation.
Parents rushed to the scene in distress after hearing about the collapse, while stunned residents gathered nearby as emergency teams secured the area and prevented people from approaching the unstable debris.
The dramatic incident has reignited public anger over the recurring problem of building collapses in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital. Experts and residents have frequently linked such disasters to substandard construction materials, unauthorized structural modifications, poor maintenance, and weak enforcement of safety regulations.
Many Lagos residents have also raised questions about how a school building showing possible structural weaknesses was allowed to continue operating.
Authorities from the Lagos State Building Control Agency have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collapse and whether building regulations were violated. The Lagos State Government has also pledged a full inquiry, promising that anyone found responsible will be held accountable.
Videos and images circulating widely on social media captured the dramatic moment the structure gave way, showing heavy slabs buckling and collapsing into a tangled heap of concrete and metal.
For many residents, the near-disaster serves as a chilling reminder of the urgent need for stricter building inspections, mandatory structural audits, and stronger enforcement of construction standards—especially for schools and facilities that house large numbers of children.
As investigations continue and authorities examine the debris, Lagosians are once again demanding reforms to prevent future tragedies.
Further updates will follow as officials release more details from the ongoing investigation.
