Lawmakers’ move to amend constitution suffers another setback

The Supreme Court sitting in Abuja has asked the National Assembly to stop further actions aimed at amending the 1999 constitution.
 
The order was given by Mahmud Mohammed, Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN led seven-man panel of justices of the apex court on Thursday morning.
 
President Goodluck Jonathan had filed an application against the announced alterations to the constitution by the national assembly.
 
The panel of Justices in granting the President’s prayer directed that a hearing notice be served on the national assembly and instructed them to maintain status quo till June 18 when the matter would be coming up for hearing.
