The Ghana Police Service has arrested a woman accused of abducting a newborn baby from Mamprobi Polyclinic in Accra, bringing a tense 24-hour nationwide search to an emotional end after the child was safely recovered and reunited with the family.

According to police at the Dansoman District, the infant was allegedly taken from the mother’s bedside shortly after she delivered via cesarean section. The mother was still recovering from surgery when the suspect reportedly entered the ward and left the facility with the baby wrapped in cloth.

The case gained national attention after CCTV footage from the polyclinic circulated widely on social media, showing a woman entering the facility and later exiting with the newborn. The footage sparked outrage online and prompted a rapid community response as residents shared images and called for urgent action.

The child was formally handed back to the family at Dansoman Police Station in an emotional reunion witnessed by relatives and officers. The mother, still recuperating from surgery, was seen holding her baby amid visible relief.

While the rescue has eased immediate fears, tensions remain high in Mamprobi and surrounding communities. Residents gathered near the facility expressing concerns about maternity ward security and the safety of newborns. Some protesters voiced strong warnings, demanding accountability and stricter safeguards to prevent similar incidents.

The Ghana Police Service confirmed that the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue. Authorities are working to determine the motive behind the alleged abduction, whether any accomplices were involved, and how access to the maternity ward was obtained without detection. Formal charges are expected to follow pending the outcome of investigations.

The incident has reignited calls for nationwide reforms in hospital security procedures. Healthcare advocates and members of the public are urging the introduction of stricter visitor controls, enhanced CCTV monitoring, improved identification systems for mothers and newborns, and specialized security training for maternity staff.

As the family begins to recover from the traumatic ordeal, public attention is now shifting toward systemic safeguards. Many Ghanaians are asking whether enough is being done to protect vulnerable newborns in healthcare facilities across the country.

For now, relief dominates the mood as the rescued infant remains safe with family. However, the case has left lasting questions about hospital security standards and the urgent need for preventive measures to ensure such incidents do not recur.

Authorities have encouraged anyone with relevant information about this or similar cases to contact the nearest police station or national emergency services.
