A 40-year-old man, Ifeanyi Ezeji, has been sent to prison for seven years without an option of fine for defiling his 12-year-old house help.
A magistrate court in Port Harcourt found him guilty of a one-count charge of defilement that was committed on February 11 at Eastern bypass area of Port Harcourt.

The Chief Magistrate, Felicita Amanze, in her judgment said the prosecution was able to prove its case. She said the defence was unable to contradict the evidence against Ezeji. He said Ezeji’s denial of the charge was an afterthought.
The magistrate frowned at the family of the victim for trying to settle the matter out of court.
The Legal Officer of the Federation of Women Lawyers in Rivers State, Esther Achor, appealed to victims and their families to stop trying to settle defilement and rape cases out of court.
She said the victim’s parents had tried to settle the matter out of court for the sum of N150,000 with the convict.
