Minister Commissions HYPREP Water Projects in Ogoni Communities

The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abass Lawal, on Tuesday inaugurated water projects executed by the Hydrocarbons Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) at Beeri in Khana Local Government Area and Bunu in Tai Local Government Area of Ogoni land.


The projects were part of the hundreds of projects built into Ogoni environment remediation projects and livelihood restoration programmes of HYPREP, which is implementing the 2011 United Nations Environment Project (UNEP) report on Ogoni land.


The Minister of Environment, who was accompanied by the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, also visited remediation sites at Ogale in Eleme Local Government Area and mangrove restoration programmes at Bodo and Bomu in Gokana Local Government Area.


HYPREP Project Coordinator, Prof Nenibarini Zabbey said the Beeri water project has a capacity of 900,000 litres and would serve seven communities while the Bunu project has a capacity of 850,000 litres and would serve three communities.


He said previous water projects had been completed in Alesa, Ebubu, Korokoro, Terabor, Bomu, Barako, Kpoghor and Kpean communities.


He said 3.5 million mangrove seedlings have been planted after remediation programmes were carried out on shorelines.


He also said 300 postgraduate scholarships have been awarded with 5,000 women and youths benefiting from training empowerment schemes.
