Nigeria’s education sector is experiencing fresh disruptions as the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (PSUBEB) has directed the immediate shutdown of all basic schools across the state amid growing security concerns.
The move comes just hours after the Federal Ministry of Education ordered the closure of 47 Federal Unity Colleges nationwide.
In a statement released on Friday, PSUBEB said Government Junior Model Secondary Schools (GJMSSs) will close effective Saturday, November 22, 2025, while all Primary and Day Schools are to shut down from Monday, November 24, 2025.
According to the Board, the decision underscores “the urgent need for preventive action” in light of current security realities in parts of Plateau State. The management emphasised that the directive is a temporary but essential measure aimed at forestalling potential threats and ensuring the wellbeing of learners.
PSUBEB assured parents, guardians, and stakeholders that the closure is a proactive step designed to protect students and restore confidence within communities. The Board urged Local Government Education Authorities, school administrators, and community leaders to fully cooperate with the directive and maintain vigilance until normalcy returns.
The latest shutdown compounds nationwide anxiety as families, school administrators, and state governments scramble to adjust to the wave of closures affecting both federal and state institutions.
Authorities say further updates will be provided as security agencies continue to assess the evolving situation.
