Nigerian-American naval officer, Captain Kelechi Ndukwe, has achieved another major milestone in his distinguished military career, following his appointment as Commodore of Destroyer Squadron 60 and Task Force 65 of the United States Navy, headquartered in Rota, Spain.
The appointment marks a significant rise for Ndukwe, who has continued to break barriers and set new records within the U.S. naval command structure. He previously made history as the first Nigerian-American to command a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer when he assumed leadership of the USS Halsey (DDG-97), a moment that drew praise from across Nigeria and the global Nigerian diaspora.
Captain Ndukwe’s new role places him in charge of one of the U.S. Navy’s key operational units responsible for maritime security, multinational exercises, and critical naval missions across Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean.
Born to Nigerian parents and raised in the United States, Ndukwe has often spoken about the pride he carries as a Nigerian-American and the values instilled in him by his heritage.
His leadership journey in the Navy has earned him widespread recognition for excellence, discipline, and commitment to service.
His latest appointment has sparked celebration across Nigerian communities at home and abroad, as many hail him as a symbol of African excellence and a testament to the contributions of Nigerians on the global stage.
Captain Ndukwe is expected to assume full command responsibilities in his new position as he continues to serve at the forefront of U.S. naval operations.
