Nepal is in the global spotlight after its youths forced long-serving Prime Minister Sherma Oli to resign, ending four scandal-ridden terms marked by corruption, nepotism, and abuse of power.

For years, citizens accused Oli’s government of looting public funds, awarding contracts to cronies, and reserving top jobs for politicians’ children while millions remained unemployed. Courts, police, and the military were widely seen as tools for bribery, leaving ordinary people powerless.

The breaking point came when young influencers launched the viral “Nepo Kid” campaign, exposing the extravagant lifestyles of politicians’ families. Instead of addressing the criticism, the government moved to silence dissent—ordering social media platforms to hand over user data and, when they refused, shutting down 26 apps and services, including emails.

That decision backfired. Within days, thousands of young Nepalis poured onto the streets. Despite curfews and live bullets that killed at least 20 people and injured more than 400, the protests swelled. Demonstrators stormed the Prime Minister’s residence, set politicians’ homes ablaze, and occupied the National Assembly. Cabinet members resigned en masse, and Oli was forced to quit on September 10, 2025, restoring access to social media.

But the fight is not over. Protesters insist on nothing less than sweeping anti-corruption laws, judicial independence, and systemic reform. For many, Oli’s fall is only the beginning of a new chapter in Nepal’s political history—one led by its fearless Gen Z.
