Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has strongly criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu over the abduction of dozens of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, describing the Federal Government as incapable of guaranteeing the safety of Nigerians amid worsening insecurity.

The criticism follows the kidnapping of at least 39 children and seven teachers from three schools in the Ahoro-Esinele community of Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026.

The victims, aged between two and 16 years, were reportedly abducted when heavily armed gunmen invaded the schools in a coordinated attack that shocked residents and reignited concerns about the security of educational institutions across the country.

One teacher was reportedly killed during the attack, while the remaining victims have remained in captivity for more than two weeks despite ongoing rescue efforts by security agencies.

Reacting to the development, Obasanjo reportedly expressed deep concern over the nation’s security situation, arguing that repeated incidents of kidnapping, banditry, and violent attacks demonstrate the government’s inability to adequately protect citizens.

According to the former president, the continued wave of insecurity has left many Nigerians living in fear and uncertainty.

“This administration has shown itself incapable of securing Nigeria,” Obasanjo reportedly stated while calling for urgent and decisive measures to rescue the abducted children and teachers.

His comments have sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over the persistence of mass abductions despite repeated government assurances that security challenges are being addressed.

Meanwhile, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has vowed not to relent in efforts to secure the release of the victims. The governor said the state government is working closely with security agencies and community leaders while exploring every lawful option available to bring the children and teachers home safely.

Security operatives have reportedly arrested six suspects in connection with the abduction as investigations continue.

However, families of the victims remain distraught as they await news of their loved ones, with many expressing concerns over the prolonged captivity of the children and teachers.

The latest abduction has once again placed Nigeria’s security crisis under intense public scrutiny, with critics accusing authorities of failing to curb the growing menace of kidnapping for ransom and attacks on vulnerable communities.

As pressure continues to mount on both federal and state authorities, Nigerians are demanding swift action to secure the release of the victims and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
