Nigeria’s opposition political landscape may be heading for another dramatic shake-up after former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-Anambra State Governor Peter Obi announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing growing internal tensions, political suspicion, and external interference.

In a deeply emotional statement shared Sunday morning, Obi said his decision was driven not by personal conflict with ADC leaders such as Senator David Mark or former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, but by what he described as the infiltration of the same toxic political forces that destabilized his previous political platform.

Obi lamented that the ADC coalition — which had briefly emerged as a potential mega opposition front uniting Obi loyalists, Atiku allies, and supporters of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 presidential primaries — was increasingly becoming consumed by internal court battles, distrust, leadership disputes, and systemic hostility.

According to Obi, rather than focusing on rescuing Nigeria from worsening insecurity, poverty, and governance failures, political actors were once again prioritizing control, exclusion, and division.

His departure has ignited widespread speculation that he may now align with the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), following viral social media posts allegedly showing Obi and Kwankwaso associates arriving at the party, processing memberships, and celebrating with declarations such as “IT IS DONE. OK is NDC.”

Although Obi has not officially confirmed joining the NDC, the reports triggered a massive reaction online, with supporters reportedly rushing to register, causing temporary disruptions to the party’s digital platforms.

Political analysts say such a move could significantly reshape opposition calculations for the 2027 elections, especially if Obi and Kwankwaso consolidate under a fresh political structure capable of challenging both the ruling APC and fragmented opposition blocs.

However, critics have seized on the development to label Obi a “political nomad,” accusing him of repeated party switches. Supporters, on the other hand, argue that his exits reflect a consistent refusal to remain in compromised political systems.

In his statement, Obi insisted he is not desperate for power or titles but remains committed to building a Nigeria where leadership serves the people rather than entrenched interests.

He emphasized that his focus remains on ending insecurity, reducing hunger, improving education and healthcare, and restoring national dignity.

The unfolding developments come as Nigeria’s opposition space continues to witness strategic realignments ahead of INEC’s critical timelines for party structures and electoral preparations.

Whether Obi’s next political chapter lies with the NDC or another coalition, his resignation from ADC marks another major twist in Nigeria’s volatile road to 2027 — one that could redefine alliances, voter loyalties, and the future of opposition politics.
