Rivers PDP Loses Senate Seat
The Court of Appeal in Abuja today ruled that George Sekibo, representing Rivers East in the Senate is not the person legally elected to the seat. Sekibo, a candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP in the contested election had challenged an earlier victory over his opponent at the appellate court. In his place, the court has declared Andrew Uchendu of the All Progressives Congress, APC as the candidate duly elected at the December 2016 legislative re-run election in the State.
The court has therefore directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to withdraw the certificate of return earlier given to Sekibo and issue another one to Uchendu.
By this decision, the appellate court has withheld the verdict of the election petition tribunal which said Uchendu won the majority of the lawful votes cast at the election.
