TASUED Officially Becomes Tai Solarin Federal University of Education as Ogun, FG Seal Historic Takeover
MoU signed at 17th convocation formalises Federal Government takeover of TASUED, preserves full accreditation, and signals expanded opportunities for teacher education and national growth
In a landmark move set to reshape teacher education in Nigeria, the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, has been formally transferred to the Federal Government, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the institution’s 17th Convocation Ceremony.
With the completion of the agreement, the institution has officially assumed a new identity as the Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, ushering in a new era marked by enhanced institutional stability, improved staff welfare, stronger student support, and long-term sustainable growth.
The transition, described as seamless and historic, underscores a shared commitment between the Ogun State Government and the Federal Government to strengthen Nigeria’s education sector while ensuring continuity in academic excellence. Authorities confirmed that the university’s 100 per cent programme accreditation and strong academic reputation have been fully preserved throughout the process.
The handover was also framed as a strategic step toward national equity, aimed at achieving a more balanced distribution of federal institutions across the country. It further honours the enduring legacies of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Bisi Onabanjo, and the late Awujale of Ijebuland, all of whom made lasting contributions to education and human capital development in Nigeria.
Reaffirming its broader education agenda, the Ogun State Government disclosed that it allocated ₦275.4 billion to the education sector in the 2026 budget, with a focus on expanding access, reducing inequality, and ensuring inclusive learning opportunities for all Nigerians, regardless of background, tribe, or religion.
The government also commended the Federal Government for its renewed commitment to educational reform and stability within the university system, expressing confidence that the transition will unlock new opportunities for staff and students while strengthening teacher education nationwide.
“With this handover, the institution has been formally released to the Federal Government, and we are confident this new status will position the university for greater national impact and long-term growth,” officials stated.
The convocation ceremony also featured moments of celebration, as Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, and former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba were conferred with honorary doctorate degrees in recognition of their outstanding contributions to education, leadership, and national development.
The honours, according to the university, celebrate lives of service that continue to inspire generations of Nigerians and reinforce the values upon which the newly named Tai Solarin Federal University of Education now stands.
With the federal takeover complete, expectations are high that the institution will emerge as a leading hub for teacher training and educational excellence in Nigeria.
