In a dramatic twist to the political crisis in Rivers State, President Bola Tinubu has successfully brokered a peace deal that will see Governor Siminalayi Fubara remain in office — on the condition that he will not contest for a second term in 2027.
The agreement was sealed during a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa on Thursday night. Attending the high-stakes session were Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike; Governor Fubara; the suspended Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule; and several lawmakers aligned with both factions.
According to sources within the presidency, the truce is part of a broader move to restore political stability and democratic order in the state following months of tension between Fubara and his predecessor-turned-political rival, Wike.
Insiders revealed that Fubara has agreed to complete his current four-year term but will not seek reelection in the 2027 governorship race — a significant concession aimed at reducing political friction. In return, Wike is said to have secured the right to nominate all local government chairpersons across the 23 LGAs of the state, reinforcing his influence over Rivers politics.
The deal, though yet to be officially announced, marks a turning point in the prolonged face-off that has threatened governance in one of Nigeria’s most politically strategic states.
