Professor Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has announced that Bola Ahmed Tinubu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC has won the hotly contested election conducted on Saturday February 25.
He won by scoring majority votes of 8,794,726 to defeat Atiku Abubakar, former vice president and candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP and Peter Obi, candidate of the Labour Party, LP. Abubakar came second with 6,984,520 votes , while Obi took the third position with 6,101,533 votes. Each of the three leading candidates won in 12 states. Labour Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State and candidate of the NNPP won in only one state and scored 1,496,687 votes to take the fourth position.
The announcement, made in the wee hours of Wednesday, came amid protests by the PDP and Labour Party that the election of February 25 be cancelled, as there were irregularities and that INEC failed to demonstrate transparency in the conduct of the election.
