Two elderly people dropped dead on Wednesday around the Refinery Junction in Eleme Local Government Area where former Senate Majority leader, Ali Ndume, inaugurated a road project executed by the Rivers State government.
But the deaths were unrelated to the project or the inauguration ceremony.
One of the deceased, a man about 70 years collapsed and died just as he stepped out of the vehicle that brought him from Bori. His son, who was alerted to the scene after his contact was collected from the phone of the deceased said the man had come to withdraw money in Eleme.
The young man and another man, who identified himself as a brother to the deceased later on hired a taxi that took the deceased away.
The other deceased person that lay on the other side of the road was a woman about 60 years old. Witnesses said she had dropped off the commercial motorcycle that was carrying her. She could not be revived.
There was no identity or a telephone on her to call her family to pick her up. The body was later on evacuated by some public spirited persons.
Later on, Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, and Ndume arrived for the inauguration of the Eleme – Oyigbo – Afam road project recently executed by the state government.
Wike said the project was one of the many that his government had executed in Rivers Southeast senatorial zone. Two of the projects, Eteo – Nonwa – Kira and Sakpenwa – Bori roads were inaugurated on Monday and Tuesday respectively by the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, and the Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
