UNILAG Lifts Ban On Student Unionism

The authorities of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, has lifted the 10-year long ban on student unionism in the institution.

Rahmon Bello, Vice Chancellor, UNILAG, announced this during the institution’s 2014/2015 matriculation ceremony which held on January 23 at the university’s multipurpose hall.

The students union of UNILAG was banned 10 years ago following a violent protest which led to the destruction of the residence of Oye Ibidapo-Obe, the then Vice chancellor among many other properties belonging to the university.

“Having been satisfied that student unionism has regenerated itself to maturity after the unfortunate incident of 2005 that led to the suspension of student union activities and the recent endorsement of the University of Lagos Student Union Constitution, the management has approved the unbanning of student unionism in the university,” Bello said.
