The Senate of the University of Lagos, UNILAG and the Governing Council of the university are set for a fresh conflict. This followed a decision on Wednesday in Abuja that Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe has been removed as the vice chancellor. The decision was hinged on his alleged indictment by a panel that probed a certain financial misdemeanor.

Aside from the report of the descension by Prof Bola Oboh who represents the university senate on the council, Ogundipe has said that the decision has no merit. Oboh had alleged that Wale Babalakin, pro chancellor of the university deliberately convened a meeting of the council after two members had left the council because their tenures expired.

Professor Oboh stated that Professors Leshi and Odukoya, as well as Mr. John Momoh were with him in voting against the removal, but the pro chancellor got six other members to support the act.
However, the embattled vice chancellor has issued a statement to counter an earlier one issued by Oladejo Azeez, registrar of the university. In it Ogundipe said the public should disregard the announcement of his removal. He probably hinged his refusal on the argument that due process was not followed by the university council.
Before the voting in Abuja, there had been a face off between the pro chancellor and Ogundipe , which led to the suspension of the convocation of the university.
