As there are only few hours left to the Christmas celebrations, traders who deal in staple foods are raking in additional profits, as buyers troop into markets to stock food items for the season.
Traders who particularly enjoyed notable patronage were those trading in frozen chicken and turkey.
A visit to some markets in Iyana Ipaja and Berger areas of Lagos, show sellers of frozen foods rowdily surrounded by prospective buyers.
Not even the slight increase in price could deter the buyers as a carton of frozen chicken laps is sold for prices ranging from N7,300 to N7,600. These formerly cost between N7,200 to N7,500.
Live fowls are also sold for between N2,000 and N3,000 depending on size and breed while turkeys’ prices range between N5,000 and N8,000.
When the magazine spoke with some of the buyers who crowded around the frozen fowls sellers at Iyana Ipaja, some of them said they opted for the frozen fowls to avoid the strenuous process involved in killing and preparing live fowls.
Others, however, said the frozen chicken or turkey are meant to supplement the live animals to be killed for the festivities.
