Workers of the Edo State-owned Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, are now to enjoy the new national minimum wage of ₦70, 000 approved by the federal government in July 2024, courtesy of the Chief Daniel Osi Orbih-led Governing Council of the university.
The approval for the immediate payment of the new salary was given during the Council’s 235th regular meeting, causing excitement amongst members of the academic and non-academic staff unions who commended Orbih, the Pro-Chancellor and other members of the council for the welcome development.
The unions were particularly grateful because they did not have to agitate for it before it was approved by the new Council, a gesture they noted underscored its proactive approach to addressing staff’s concerns.
A statement by the AAU’s Principal Assistant Registrar and Head of Information and Public Relations, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, made available to journalists in Benin City, said that the union leaders expressed deep appreciation for the council’s approval of the long overdue minimum wage.
According to Aladenika, the unionists recalled that under the immediate past administration, their efforts to implement the minimum wage were unsuccessful, lamenting that they faced victimization for advocating better worker welfare.
Meanwhile, Orbih, the pro-chancellor and chairman of the Governing Council, has assured staff and students of “well-thought-out policies” to reshape the institution’s fortune for the better.
In an interaction with journalists shortly after the council’s recent 235th regular meeting, Orbih said the council approved the ₦70,000 new minimum wage, as recommended by the National Universities Commission (NUC), effective immediately.
While enjoining the staff to rededicate themselves to their duties, the pro-chancellor assured dedicated employees of further benefits.
