Panic and outrage have gripped Nigerians following a deadly highway attack along the busy Ore–Benin Expressway, where suspected gunmen ambushed a commercial bus belonging to GUO Transport Company, killing the driver and abducting several passengers.
According to eyewitness accounts, the bus—reportedly travelling from Lagos toward the eastern part of the country—was intercepted early Monday morning. The attackers opened fire on the driver, who died instantly, before forcing frightened passengers out of the vehicle and leading them into nearby bush paths.
Disturbing videos circulating online show the aftermath of the attack: the stranded bus with its doors left open, personal belongings scattered across the highway, and bystanders reacting in shock. Witnesses said the assailants operated with confidence, herding victims away from the road without immediate resistance.
The Ore–Benin corridor has long been considered a high-risk route due to frequent reports of kidnappings and armed attacks. Dense vegetation and poor visibility in some sections have been blamed for enabling criminal activities, despite the presence of multiple security checkpoints along the highway.
Public anger has intensified on social media, with many Nigerians questioning how such an incident could occur in an area reportedly monitored by security operatives. Some unverified claims suggested that security personnel may have been nearby during the attack, further fueling concerns over response effectiveness.
As of several hours after the incident, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the Nigerian Army has released an official statement. The transport company involved has also yet to confirm details, including the number of passengers abducted or any ongoing rescue efforts.
The latest incident adds to growing fears over safety on Nigeria’s highways, prompting renewed calls for urgent government action. Security experts and citizens alike are demanding enhanced patrols, improved surveillance, and stronger intelligence operations to curb the rising wave of attacks.
Authorities are under increasing pressure to secure the safe release of the abducted passengers and restore confidence in road travel across the country.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
