The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Council, has been thrown into mourning following the killing of its Organising Secretary, Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya or simply Ijaya.

Ajiboye reportedly died after unidentified gunmen attacked his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road corridor in Lagos on a Sunday night in mid-July 2026. His death has sparked widespread reactions across the transport union community and on social media, where emotional videos from his funeral have continued to attract significant attention.

According to multiple credible Nigerian media reports, Ajiboye was returning home after visiting his childhood community in the Fadeyi area of Lagos when armed assailants opened fire on his vehicle. He sustained serious injuries during the attack and later died from his wounds. Reports also indicated that his white vehicle was riddled with bullets during the incident.

As of July 22, 2026, security agencies have not identified the attackers, announced any arrests, or disclosed a motive behind the killing. Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.

The tragic death of the union official sent shockwaves through the Lagos transport sector, prompting an outpouring of grief from colleagues, friends, and political associates. Lagos State NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, paid an emotional tribute to Ajiboye, describing him as a loyal friend, dependable ally, and one of the strongest pillars of his leadership team.

In his tribute, Sego said Ajiboye was “more than an ally,” expressing deep sorrow over the loss of someone he credited with playing a vital role in the affairs of the Lagos State Council. The chairman noted that Ajiboye’s commitment, loyalty, and dedication to the union would be remembered for years to come.

Following his burial, several videos from the funeral ceremony began circulating widely on social media. One of the most shared clips captured Ajiboye’s daughter delivering an emotional tribute before breaking down in tears. Her heartfelt speech moved many viewers, drawing thousands of reactions and condolence messages online.

Other videos from the funeral showed grieving family members, colleagues, and NURTW officials paying their final respects to the late union leader, highlighting the profound impact his death has had on those who knew him personally and professionally.

Although the Lagos transport sector has experienced leadership rivalries and occasional violent clashes over the years, there is currently no official evidence linking Ajiboye’s killing to union politics or internal disputes. Authorities have not established any connection between the attack and ongoing or past disagreements within the NURTW.

Following the incident, security operatives, including personnel from the Lagos Rapid Response Squad (RRS), were reportedly deployed to maintain calm in parts of the Fadeyi area as investigations continued.
