Former Emmanuel Eboué has shared the painful details of how a failed marriage, financial decisions, and bankruptcy left him without his fortune and estranged from his son, years after bringing the curtain down on his football career.

The 43-year-old former Arsenal F.C. defender revealed that he transferred many of his assets into the name of his Belgian ex-wife, Aurélie Bertrand, in a bid to reduce tax liabilities. However, the decision reportedly backfired following their divorce in 2017, leaving him bankrupt and without access to much of his wealth.

Speaking in an emotional video that has gone viral on social media, Eboué admitted that the financial fallout from the divorce changed the course of his life, forcing him to start over after years at the top of professional football.

Perhaps even more painful, the former Ivory Coast national football team international disclosed that he has not spoken to his 17-year-old son, Mathis, in four or five years.

Mathis, regarded as one of England’s promising young football talents, joined the Chelsea F.C. academy in January 2025 before signing his first professional contract with the club on February 4, 2026. His mother attended the contract signing ceremony, while Eboué was absent.

The former defender’s financial struggles became public after he was declared bankrupt, a development that shocked many football fans who remembered him as one of the Premier League’s most energetic full-backs during his playing days.

Following the difficult period, Eboué returned to Ivory Coast, where he has rebuilt his life by working as a football coach. He also remarried in 2024, describing it as a fresh chapter after years of hardship.

The emotional revelations have generated widespread reactions online, with many fans expressing sympathy for the former footballer and describing his experience as a cautionary tale about financial planning, asset ownership, and the personal consequences of divorce. Others argued that better financial decisions and personal responsibility could have helped him avoid such a devastating outcome.

As his son continues to progress at Chelsea, Eboué’s story has resonated with football fans around the world, highlighting that life after retirement from professional sport can bring challenges that extend far beyond the pitch.
