Bukayo Saka warmed the hearts of football fans around the world after reuniting with his grandmother from Oro in Kwara State, Nigeria, following Arsenal’s final home game of the Premier League season at the Emirates Stadium.

The emotional moment came after Arsenal secured a victory over Burnley thanks to a first-half goal from Kai Havertz. Saka’s grandmother, who travelled from Nigeria to London to watch her grandson play, joined other family members pitchside shortly after the final whistle in scenes many supporters described as one of the most touching moments of the campaign.

Photos and videos of the reunion quickly spread across social media, with fans praising the Arsenal winger for remaining closely connected to his Nigerian roots despite his global football fame.

Born in Ealing, London, on September 5, 2001, Saka is the son of Nigerian parents Yomi and Adenike Saka. His mother is from Ijomu-Oro in Kwara State, while his father hails from Ogun State. Both parents are of Yoruba heritage, something the England international has openly celebrated throughout his career.

Saka’s full name — Bukayo Moses Ayoyinka Temidayo Saka — reflects his cultural background. The name “Bukayo,” which means “God has added joy” in Yoruba, was reportedly given to him by his grandmother at birth.

The Arsenal star has repeatedly spoken about his pride in his Nigerian heritage and the values instilled in him by his parents. Those family connections were further highlighted during his widely publicised trip to Nigeria in 2023.

During the visit, Saka received a warm reception in Lagos, visited an orphanage, met supporters, and held talks with Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He later travelled to Oro in Kwara State, where he reunited with his grandparents and extended family members in a visit that generated massive reactions online.

Images from the trip went viral among football fans and Nigerians in the diaspora, with many celebrating Saka as a symbol of pride for the country and the African community abroad.

The 23-year-old has also enjoyed another impressive campaign for Arsenal F.C., contributing 17 goals and 15 assists as the club continued its strong Premier League title challenge.

Beyond his performances on the pitch, Saka’s visible connection to his roots has made him a role model for many young Africans worldwide. His reunion with his grandmother at the Emirates Stadium served as a powerful reminder of the importance of family, culture, and identity even at the highest level of global sport.
