An Abuja High Court has issued a restraining order barring the Nigerian Police, Mohammed Abubakar, Inspector General of Police, IGP, and Joseph Mbu, Abuja commissioner of police, CP from arresting any of the ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ protesters in Abuja.
The court gave the order while ruling on a 10-count suit filed by Dino Melaye, one of the protesters against the respondents following the Abuja CP’s initial ban on all protests in Abuja. Melaye was granted all ten reliefs sought.
Abubakar Talba, the judge granted a perpetual order barring the police, IGP, and the Abuja CP from further arresting or disrupting protests by Melaye especially if the protests are in the interest of the public.
Talba also declared as illegal any arrest of Melaye resulting from public interest protests following which an order was given to the police, Abubakar, and Mbu to publicly apologize to Melaye in any National Newspaper.
The court stated that the police have no right to stop citizens from protesting in the interest of the public and declared that the ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ protest was in the interest of the public.
