The United Nations has sounded the alarm over a fast-deteriorating security situation in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), warning that the next 24 hours would be critical as clashes between government forces and M23 rebels escalated.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, condemned the increasing human rights violations, ethnic violence, and attacks on displaced persons. The humanitarian crisis has reached alarming levels, with hospitals overwhelmed, dead bodies scattered in the streets, and essential infrastructure in ruins following widespread power, water, and internet outages.
As the security situation worsens, nearly 4,800 prisoners have escaped from Goma’s main prison, further deepening concerns over lawlessness in the region. The UN has also expressed grave concern over the surge in sexual violence and targeted attacks on healthcare workers, painting a grim picture of the unfolding disaster.
In response to the escalating violence, thousands of protesters took to the streets of Kinshasa, demanding urgent action from the government and the international community. With tensions at a breaking point, global leaders are under pressure to intervene before the crisis spirals further out of control.
