No arrests have been made in connection with Tuesday’s brazen attacks on the Edo State secretariat of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City, and the residence of a national leader of the party and former governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie Oyegun.

Recall that the fully armed gunmen had stormed the Ogbelaka Street, off Sokponba Road secretariat of the party where the former governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the September 21, 2024, Edo governorship election, Olumide Akpata had just been welcomed into the party.

Political observers and opposition parties see it as an assassination attempt particularly on the life of Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the LP, who had been forewarned by Governor Monday Okpebholo not to visit Edo without his permission as his security would not be guaranteed.

Three former governors, namely Obi of Anambra State, Prof. Oserhiemen Osunbor and Odigie-Oyegun, both of Edo State, narrowly escaped death as the invaders came shortly after they left the party’s secretariat following a security tip-off.

Disappointed that the ADC leaders had escaped, the hoodlums proceeded to the Odigie-Oyegun’s residence in the GRA where a meeting of the elders was ongoing.
In an attempt to gain access into the building, they released a volley of bullets on the gate, riddling it with holes. Frustrated, they shot at all the vehicles parked outside the gate, wreaking severe damage on them.

More than 24 hours after, the police said no arrests had been made, but investigation had commenced.
Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, an assistant superintendent of police, (ASP) said “Investigation has already been started by the police. No arrest has been made as at now and we will communicate to you as investigation progresses”.
