Veteran politician Rowland Owie has strongly refuted allegations linking him to the disruption of a political gathering in Edo State, describing the accusations as “absurd, malicious, and a desperate attempt at disinformation.”

Owie, a prominent leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Chief Whip of the Senate, dismissed claims suggesting he was involved in attacks targeting former governor John Odigie-Oyegun, Labour Party figure Peter Obi, and politician Olumide Akpata during a political meeting in Benin City.

According to the former senator, the event was ongoing peacefully while he delivered a keynote address to party faithful and distinguished guests when security operatives reportedly alerted organizers to the movement of suspected APC-affiliated thugs toward the venue. As a precautionary measure to safeguard attendees, the meeting was immediately concluded.

Owie alleged that the accusations formed part of a broader strategy by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to deflect blame and destabilize the ADC’s rising political influence in Edo State. He described the development as the third in a series of incidents where disruptions were allegedly followed by attempts to blame the opposition party.

“In all my political life since 1979, I have never been involved in violent politics,” Owie stated. “I have built my career on dialogue, legislative integrity, and service. I would not tarnish a legacy spanning over four decades. To suggest I would sponsor an attack at a gathering attended by respected leaders, including my own relative, is not only false but insulting.”

He called on the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, and other security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into those allegedly identified as responsible for the attempted disruption, rather than acting on what he termed fabricated petitions.

Reaffirming the ADC’s commitment to peaceful political engagement, Owie insisted the party would not be intimidated or drawn into violence. He emphasized that the focus remains on presenting what he described as a credible alternative for governance in Edo State.
