The Federal Government has once again reviewed the cost of obtaining international passports upward, sparking public outcry. Beginning September 1, 2025, the 32-page passport will cost ₦100,000, while the 64-page passport will now be priced at ₦200,000.

The development, announced by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), marks one of the steepest increases in recent years. Many Nigerians have taken to social media to express frustration, noting that the new fees place Nigeria among the countries with the highest passport charges globally, despite lower average income levels.

Analysts warn that the hike could further worsen accessibility for ordinary citizens, particularly students, traders, and professionals seeking opportunities abroad. Civil society organizations are also calling on the government to review the policy, citing the economic hardship already faced by Nigerians.

Comparative data shows that passport fees in Nigeria now far exceed those in several advanced economies such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. Critics argue that while the government claims the increase is necessary to cover production costs and enhance security features, the policy disproportionately burdens citizens at a time of inflation and rising unemployment.

As the September implementation date approaches, Nigerians are bracing for the financial strain, while advocacy groups prepare petitions demanding a reversal.
