With less than five days to the presidential campaign rally of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Kano, the state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has ordered a two-week shutdown of the Sani Abacha Stadium.

Although many Nigerians consider the action of the governor as outrageous, Ganduje, who has been in the eye of the storm over bribery allegation, said that the stadium was closed to enable the state government carry out renovation of its facilities.

The stadium was used for President Muhammadu Buhari re-election campaign rally last week, but was shut ahead of the February 10 rally of his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP. But Abbati Sabo, spokesman of the Kano State Sports Commission said the closure of the stadium was not targeted at the PDP presidential rally.
