A Ghanaian parent has sparked nationwide debate after revealing that her 7-year-old daughter’s Creative Arts textbook, approved by the Ghana Education Service (GES), contained the full lyrics of Yemi Alade’s hit song “Johnny” and “Come and See My Mother,” a collaboration between Yemi Alade and Ghanaian singer MzVee.

The concerned mother, who shared a video online, expressed disbelief as she flipped through the hefty Basic 3 Creative Arts book only to discover pages requiring her daughter to learn the Afrobeats songs word for word. “My daughter is just turning seven very soon, and she’s supposed to learn this whole song. This is so wrong,” she lamented.

She questioned why children in primary school should be memorizing Afrobeats lyrics instead of age-appropriate cultural or educational material. “Of all the songs they could have chosen, this is what they put in the curriculum? A six or seven-year-old shouldn’t have any business being exposed to this in school,” she said.

The revelation has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many parents and education stakeholders demanding answers from the GES. Critics argue that the curriculum should focus on promoting traditional cultural songs, moral instruction, and creativity suited for young learners rather than commercial Afrobeats tracks.

As of now, the Ghana Education Service has not issued a public response. However, the viral outcry has intensified calls for a curriculum review, with many insisting that officials must re-examine textbooks before approving them for classroom use.

This controversy highlights a growing tension between contemporary pop culture and classroom education in Ghana — and whether the two can co-exist without compromising children’s development.
