In a move that has sparked widespread praise, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved a dramatic increase in the salaries of security guards at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso. Their pay has been raised from a meager ₦18,800 to ₦80,000 after one of the guards courageously voiced out their plight during a recent public meeting.

The guard’s bold intervention shed light on the appalling conditions endured by outsourced security personnel, who had long been underpaid despite the rising cost of living. Makinde’s swift response to address the issue has drawn comparisons to similar humane interventions in workplaces, where leaders stepped in to ensure outsourced workers were treated with dignity.

Dr. Vincent Ahonsi, a development expert, shared a parallel story on social media, recalling how he confronted an outsourcing company in Abuja that paid its security staff about ₦30,000 monthly without insurance, pensions, or basic benefits. When his instructions for fairer pay were ignored, he terminated the company’s contract and employed the security team directly on salaries of ₦85,000, with full benefits.

Observers say Makinde’s action reflects “fairness and humanity,” reminding leaders and institutions that even the lowest-paid workers deserve living wages, recognition, and respect. Many Nigerians have hailed the governor for setting an example of responsive leadership, especially in a period of economic hardship.

With this new policy, LAUTECH security personnel will not only earn a sustainable income but also enjoy renewed dignity in their work. Citizens are now calling on other state leaders and institutions to emulate Makinde’s approach and review the pay structure of vulnerable workers across the country.
