The Kwankwasiyya Movement has issued an emphatic denial of reports suggesting that its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is planning to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), branding the claims as false, reckless, and deliberately misleading.

In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday and signed by the movement’s spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, the group said the rumours—now circulating widely across television, online platforms, and social media—have no basis in fact.

The statement categorically declared that Senator Kwankwaso has never held any negotiations, discussions, meetings, or communications—either directly or through intermediaries—with the APC, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, or their representatives regarding defection.

It further clarified that the last official meeting between Kwankwaso and President Tinubu occurred in January 2024, stressing that the encounter did not involve party switching, political alignment, demands, or bargaining of any kind.

“All narratives about ‘high demands,’ secret negotiations, or political bargaining are complete fabrications built around meetings that never took place,” the movement stated.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement also criticised sections of the media for what it described as unprofessional reporting, accusing them of amplifying unverified claims without credible sources or attempts to seek clarification from Kwankwaso or his team.

“It is deeply troubling that allegations of this magnitude—capable of damaging reputations and distorting public understanding—are published without verification, balance, or factual accuracy,” the statement read. “Journalism is a noble profession anchored on truth, not speculation, gossip, or conjecture disguised as insider analysis.”

According to the movement, the rumours form part of a coordinated political smear campaign aimed at undermining Kwankwaso’s influence ahead of future elections. It suggested that some of those promoting the defection story are themselves recent or prospective APC defectors, attempting to rationalise their political decisions by projecting similar motives onto others.

Reaffirming Kwankwaso’s political identity, the statement described the former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate as a leader guided by principle, discipline, and integrity, who does not “negotiate his convictions behind closed doors” or engage in politics of convenience.

“Kwankwaso’s strength has always come from the grassroots—from ordinary Nigerians and the downtrodden—not from elite deals or media echo chambers,” the movement said.

The statement concluded with an unequivocal rejection of the defection claims and urged Nigerians to ignore what it termed misleading reports and manufactured analyses:

“There were no negotiations.
There were no demands.
There was no discussion of defection.
Kwankwasiyya remains steadfast.
The people remain resolute.
And the truth will prevail.”

The denial comes at a time when political realignments and defections are dominating national discourse ahead of the 2027 general elections. Senator Kwankwaso remains one of the most influential political figures in Northern Nigeria, commanding significant loyalty in Kano and beyond through the Kwankwasiyya movement.

As the controversy settles, attention now turns to whether those behind the rumours will retract their claims—or continue to push a narrative the movement insists is nothing more than political fiction.
