In a significant political development that could reshape Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, major opposition parties have agreed to work towards presenting a single consensus candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The decision was reached on Saturday during the National Opposition Summit held at the Oyo State Government Banquet Hall in Ibadan, convened by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

Reading the communiqué on behalf of the coalition, factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), disclosed that participating parties had resolved to adopt a united front ahead of the next general election.

“We shall work towards fielding one presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, which shall be agreed and supported by all participating opposition parties to rescue our nation and her long-suffering masses,” Turaki said.

The summit attracted key political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola, alongside representatives of several political platforms.

Deliberations at the meeting culminated in a nine-point communiqué titled the “Ibadan Declaration,” outlining a roadmap for opposition cooperation and electoral strategy.

Among its key resolutions, the coalition pledged to resist what it described as attempts to undermine Nigeria’s multi-party democracy, vowing to jointly contest the 2027 elections across all levels. The parties also raised concerns over the credibility of the electoral process and called for reforms, including amendments to the Electoral Act and a review of election guidelines.

Participating parties include factions of the Peoples Democratic Party, the African Democratic Congress led by Senator David Mark, the Labour Party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party, the Peoples Redemption Party, among others.

Governor Seyi Makinde was commended by participants for hosting the summit, which many described as a crucial step toward building a formidable alliance capable of challenging the ruling party.

Despite the ambitious resolution, no specific presidential candidate has been named. Leaders emphasized that consultations would continue to identify and agree on a consensus figure acceptable to all parties involved.

The move comes amid ongoing internal disputes within some opposition parties, particularly factions within the PDP, raising questions about cohesion ahead of the elections. However, political observers say the Ibadan Declaration signals renewed momentum for opposition unity.

The communiqué stressed the urgency of collective action, noting that the coalition’s objective is to “rescue the nation” and address the challenges facing over 200 million Nigerians.

As reactions continue to emerge nationwide, attention is now focused on whether the proposed alliance can overcome internal divisions and translate its resolution into a viable electoral force ahead of 2027.

This is a developing story. More updates and political reactions are expected.
