Growing frustration over Nigeria’s unstable electricity supply has taken center stage as Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a prominent figure in the All-Progressives Congress (APC), issued a strong warning over what he described as a deepening national power crisis.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Oyintiloye said the persistent decline in electricity supply is fast eroding the gains of the Federal Government’s reform efforts in the power sector, leaving millions of Nigerians in hardship.
He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently step in, stressing that the current situation is no longer sustainable for households or businesses.
Across the country, unreliable power has disrupted economic activities, with small and medium-scale enterprises bearing the brunt, while larger industries struggle with rising operational costs. For many households, access to electricity has become a daily uncertainty, with some unable to get up to three hours of supply.
The situation has been further aggravated by intense heat conditions, making life increasingly unbearable for citizens who depend on electricity for cooling and basic comfort.
Oyintiloye pointed to deeper structural issues within the sector, including recurring national grid collapses, inadequate gas supply, weak transmission infrastructure, and long-standing underinvestment. He urged the Federal Government to constitute an independent panel to investigate the root causes of the crisis and recommend lasting solutions.
He also called on the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and relevant agencies to take immediate and coordinated action to stabilize electricity supply.
Warning of potential escalation, Oyintiloye noted that the ongoing power challenges have already sparked peaceful protests in parts of the country, cautioning that public anger could intensify if urgent steps are not taken.
“The hardship is real, and Nigerians are feeling the pressure from all sides,” he said. “Electricity is not a luxury—it is essential for survival, productivity, and economic stability.”
He further highlighted the burden of rising fuel prices, which has made alternative power sources like generators increasingly unaffordable for many Nigerians.
While acknowledging the reform initiatives introduced by President Tinubu’s administration, Oyintiloye stressed that decisive intervention in the power sector is critical to restoring public confidence and preventing further socio-economic strain.
