Osogbo Streets Deserted As Curfew Takes Effect

The streets of Osogbo, capital of Osun State are deserted in compliance with the 7pm to 7am curfew imposed on the state. All through the afternoon on Friday, there was a heavy deployment of security personnel to different parts of the state.

One could read the excitement of policemen as they were driven away in lorries shouting, apparently battle ready for the exercise tomorrow.

However, there are fears that two issues may cause crisis during the polls tomorrow. First is the controversy over the legality of voters choosing to take photographs of their ballot papers before dropping them in the ballot box.

Legal opinions are already sharply divided over that with INEC insisting that it was illegal for anyone to do so while the APC had advised its supporters to take photographs of their ballot papers before dropping them in the ballot box.

The second is the instruction from the police that voters should take a distance of about 300 meters away from the polling booths after voting.

The APC is already accusing its opponent, the PDP, of doing all it could to rig the election. It cited two cases including one in which an INEC staff at Obokun local government was caught with voting materials which they insisted were ballots papers he allegedly was taking to the residence of a local PDP chieftain.

Olusegun Agbaje, Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State however said what the accused INEC official was caught with were not crucial voting materials.

He also said that the INEC official in question was not going to the house of any politician. On the contrary, he said the accused official was only trying to return the materials to the INEC headquarters in Osogbo when he was apprehended.

The REC however did not explain why the staff in question had to move the materials in the wee hours of the day.

The accused INEC staff has been released by the police.
