A shocking and tragic event unfolded at the Benin Motor Park, Delta State, as 28-year-old Mene Ogidi was fatally shot by Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, while handcuffed and non-resisting. Ogidi, who was detained after transport union members discovered a pistol in his parcel, was allegedly subdued and posed no immediate threat at the time of the shooting.

The fatal incident has raised alarms across the nation, as the use of lethal force on a restrained suspect violates established police protocols. Authorities have confirmed the transfer of Usman and his entire team to Abuja for disciplinary hearings and potential prosecution. Police spokespersons condemned the act as an “extra-judicial killing,” expressing deep regret over Ogidi’s death while extending their condolences to his grieving family.

However, the case has stirred more than just outrage. Activists and citizens are raising serious concerns over potential cover-ups and systemic corruption. Human rights advocate Harrison Gwamnishu voiced his skepticism over the events, citing Usman’s history of misconduct. Gwamnishu’s impassioned plea on social media read:

“I believe this boy was set up by whoever sent him to collect the waybill, the same person also informed the police. The way they quickly took his life shows it’s all planned.”

In a haunting call for justice, Gwamnishu shared the heartbreaking narrative of Ogidi’s final moments, questioning the integrity of the police actions:

“You caught him and tied both hands behind his back, stripped of any chance to defend himself. He wasn’t fighting, he wasn’t running, he was begging. Begging for a chance. Begging you to take him to Sapele, to show you someone, anyone, who could speak for him, who could prove his innocence. But you didn’t listen. You pulled the trigger and ended his voice, his plea, his chance to be heard. The next act maybe—a gun placed beside his lifeless body. A story is crafted. A label is stamped: ‘Armed Robber.’ Just like that. But tell me… Can a dead man speak? Can a lifeless body defend itself?”

The post has sparked widespread discussions across social media, with many users calling for justice and demanding an investigation into the police force’s actions.

Public Outcry:
Many Nigerians are voicing their anger and disappointment on social media platforms:

  • “This is heartbreaking! A man handcuffed and begging for his life, and they killed him like an animal! We demand justice for Mene Ogidi!” – @ChrisOluwaseun
  • “The police must be held accountable for this senseless killing. We can’t let this go unnoticed.” – @AishaGory
  • “When will the injustice end? These police officers need to be brought to trial!” – @IkeDavid21

As the investigation unfolds, calls for justice continue to grow, with citizens and activists alike demanding transparency and accountability from the police.

What’s Next?
The fate of Assistant Superintendent Nuhu Usman and his team now rests in the hands of the authorities in Abuja, as they face prosecution for the unlawful use of force. The public is eagerly awaiting further developments, as many fear that this may just be another instance of abuse of power in a long history of unchecked police brutality.
