Senegalese-American singer and entrepreneur Akon has set social media ablaze following a candid interview in which he claimed that life felt “a lot easier” when he had multiple women in his life compared to being with just one partner.
Speaking during a conversation with media personality Justin Laboy, the Grammy-nominated artist opened up about his long-standing views on relationships and polygamy. The interview, which has since gone viral across major platforms, has triggered widespread debate.
“My life was a lot easier when I had multiple women surrounding me… It’s a lot harder with just one woman. It’s hard,” Akon said during the discussion.
The “Smack That” hitmaker suggested that managing multiple relationships created a different dynamic that he personally found less demanding than focusing entirely on a single partner. When asked directly about how many women are currently in his life, he declined to give a clear answer, jokingly saying he would “plead the fifth.”
Akon, who has previously spoken about practicing a form of polygamy, went further to share his perspective on gender roles. He argued that men and women are not equal in certain biological and relational contexts, a stance that has drawn both support and criticism.
“A woman can have one baby a year. A man can have a thousand. That’s our purpose and role in life. That is nature,” he stated, adding that he believes modern ideas of equality in relationships—particularly in American culture—are “twisted.”
The remarks quickly gained traction online, with clips from the interview circulating widely on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and X. While some users praised the artist for being honest and unapologetic about his beliefs, others criticized the comments as outdated and controversial.
This is not the first time Akon has defended his lifestyle. In past interviews, including one with radio host Big Boy, he has described having multiple partners as beneficial, citing shared responsibilities and personal freedom.
Beyond music, Akon is also known for ambitious ventures such as Akon City, a futuristic development project in Senegal that has drawn global attention.
