The Senate on Tuesday, passed the Criminal Justice Bill that would ensure speedy dispensation of justice in the country.
According to Umaru Dahiru Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, the Bill would promote efficient management of criminal justice institutions when signed into law by the president.
He said the bill will also help to protect the rights and interests of suspects, defendants and victims.
Dahiru noted that the Bill has merged and consolidated the Criminal Procedure Code applicable in the North with the Criminal Procedure Code applicable in the Southern parts of the country.
In addition to these, the Bill had also unified the criminal procedure of the Federal High Court in the Federal Capital Territory with that of all Federal High Courts in the country.
Commenting on the bill, David Mark, Senate President said the passage of the Bill would help a lot in repositioning the criminal justice system in the country.
While noting that the efforts the lawmakers put into passing the Bill underscores its importance, the Senate president commended them for making moves to ensure that the Bill was passed into law.
