President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved two major development projects aimed at transforming Plateau State’s economic and security outlook, in a move seen as a significant federal intervention in Northern Nigeria’s ongoing challenges.

The approvals, which include the establishment of a Skills Acquisition Centre in Jos and Plateau’s inclusion in a 1,000-megawatt regional power generation project, were conveyed to Governor Caleb Mutfwang during a high-level delegation visit to the Government House in Rayfield on April 4.

The delegation, led by Mohammed Dahiru and accompanied by retired naval officer Suleiman D. El-ladan, delivered the president’s approvals as part of broader efforts to address unemployment, power shortages, and insecurity in the region.

Central to the intervention is the proposed Skills Acquisition Centre, which will be established under the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI). The centre is expected to provide practical, market-driven training to young people, equipping them with employable skills and reducing their vulnerability to crime and social unrest. The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to empower youths and stimulate grassroots economic growth in Plateau State.

Alongside this, Plateau has been selected as a pilot location for a major 1,000MW power project to be executed across Northern Nigeria through a proposed New Nigerian Energy Company in partnership with the United States. The project is designed to significantly improve electricity supply in the region, boost industrial productivity, and create employment opportunities, while also addressing long-standing energy deficits that have hindered economic development.

Governor Mutfwang welcomed the approvals, describing them as timely and strategic interventions that directly address some of the state’s most pressing challenges. He noted that improved access to electricity and increased youth empowerment would play a crucial role in reducing insecurity and fostering sustainable development.

The development follows President Tinubu’s recent visit to Jos, where he met with victims of attacks and pledged stronger federal support for peace and reconstruction efforts in Plateau. The latest approvals are widely seen as a continuation of that commitment, translating promises into tangible projects.

Although both initiatives are currently at the approval stage, stakeholders expect detailed implementation frameworks, including funding structures and timelines, to be unveiled in the coming weeks. Analysts say the combination of human capital development and energy infrastructure reflects a broader strategy to tackle the root causes of instability in Northern Nigeria.

With Plateau now positioned as a key beneficiary of these interventions, expectations are rising among residents and business stakeholders that the projects will mark a turning point in the state’s economic trajectory and overall security outlook.
