The Osun State Election Petitions Tribunal has today, declared Rauf Aregbesola, candidate of the All Progressives Party, APC in the August 2014 governorship elections, winner. The tribunal, headed by Justice Elizabeth Ipejime, upheld that Aregbesola defeated his opponent, Iyiola Omisore of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the elections. While the incumbent governor scored 394,684 at the polls, Omisore polled 292,747 votes.
After the elections, Omisore, who cited irregularities in some areas, had filed a petition to the tribunal challenging Aregbesola’s victory. Rather than the governor, he asked the court to declare him winner of the elections. But having looked into the matter, Akin Olujinmi, his counsel, Aregbesola’s lawyer and Ayotunde Ogunleye, counsel to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, prayed the court to dismiss the case on the ground that Omisore could not prove his case. Having looked into the documents tendered by both parties, the court finally passed its verdict today, upholding the governor’s election.
